Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team Ladies or AMURTEL is an international volunteer organisation that works to help improve the quality of life for people experiencing chronic poverty or acute stress from environmental, financial, or political distress. Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar founded the organisation in 1978 with the aim to respond and work specifically to the problems faced by women and children worldwide in their struggles.[1][2][3] The AMURTEL centres are managed by the Avadhutikas of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha.[4]

History

Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team Ladies or AMURTEL was founded in 1978[2] by Marga guru Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar as a sister organisation of Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT).[5] The organisation's primary aim was to respond to specifically to the problems faced by women and children in their daily-life struggles.[6]

Mission statement

According to the mission statement of AMURTEL, they work to—[1]

alleviate suffering and to provide immediate and long term relief to women and children in need, in a manner that will improve their overall quality of life. If women are given an opportunity for education, adequate health care, economic self- reliance, and involvement in their own progress, their all-round health and well-being will, in turn, be reflected in the improved welfare of their children and community.

  3. Every human being, regardless of race, creed, gender, color, or social status is a dignified member of the human family and should be treated with respect and compassion.
  4. It is only by showing respect for women and ensuring their integration and active participation in the development process that harmonious growth in the family, community, and society can be achieved.
