O lord,
Alas, with light and dark, day goes by;
my days pass by in pain and pleasure,
Until now, still You did not arrive.
yet, you still don't come.
Though I see dense black concealed by light,
The dark curtain, it draws not aside.

Though i see light,
The flower's tender smile becomes frowsy,
the dark curtain,
Silently, within the night's obscurity.
covering me up in deep blackness,
Full-moon's light is consumed by time's hunger...
is not removed.
Moon, a morsel when the demon [[:wikipedia:Rahu|Rahu]] swaggers.
Viewing all, in the mind such pain I get;
Even a bit of it I can't express.

The soft smile of my flower
Inwardly, I ask of You in the utmost privacy:
silently fades in the depth of the night.
What purpose serves this light-and-shade fancy?

Won't You please tell, won't You tell me
The nectar of the full moon
Why this world came into being?
is destroyed
by the hunger of time,
and the moon
becomes overpowered
by the shadow ra'hu.

Looking at it all,
my mind sorrows
but is unable to speak.

Yet, somehow, i secretly console my mind,
asking myself:

Why these imaginations of light and shade?
Tell me why you created this world?

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Álo áṋdháre háy din ket́e jáy[nb 2]
Tumi ekhano to ele ná
Tabu dekhi álo d́háke ghana kálo
Áṋdhár javaniká sare ná

Phulera mrdu hási haye jáy bási
Ráteri gahane niirave
Púrńimár sudhá náshe káler kśudhá
Gráse cáṋde ráhu garave
Sab dekhe jái mane duhkha pái
Kichu je kahite pári ná

Shudhái mane mane tomáre gopane
Kena e álo cháyá kalpaná
Balo ná balo ná balo ná ámáre
Kena je e dhará racaná

Alas, with light and dark, day goes by;
Until now, still You did not arrive.
Though I see dense black concealed by light,
The dark curtain, it draws not aside.

The flower's tender smile becomes frowsy,
Silently, within the night's obscurity.
Full-moon's light is consumed by time's hunger...
Moon, a morsel when the demon Rahu swaggers.
Viewing all, in the mind such pain I get;
Even a bit of it I can't express.

Inwardly, I ask of You in the utmost privacy:
What purpose serves this light-and-shade fancy?
Won't You please tell, won't You tell me
Why this world came into being?

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ According to some sources, instead of din ket́e jáy, it should be din je ket́e jáy. This alternate form would have little impact on the meter and sense of the first line.
