Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Hiyára viińáy nava dyotanáy
E kon ráginii balo áji bájále
Ghana varaśáy kon bharasáy
Ghar cháŕite more kena balile

Phulguli jhare geche káṋt́águlo paŕe áche
Phuler kánan mor saorabha háráyeche
Mana jamunáy mará jamunáy
Ujáne vanyá balo kena bahále

Áloker samároha dúre sariyá geche
Áṋdhárer ástarań je neve eseche
Hrta jiivane rikta práńe
Nútaner álo balo kena d́hálile

On heart's lute, with a new significance,
Pray tell, which tune did You play today?
Amid the heavy rain, with a vague assurance,
My home, why did You bid me to forsake?

The blossoms have all fallen, just thorns remaining;
In my flower garden, the fragrance has been lost.
As to the Jamuna[nb 2] of mind, my dying Jamuna,
Do say why You did make its current rush upstream.

Effulgent splendor is far removed from me;
Rather, a sheet of gloom has come and smothered.
Into my ravaged life, my destitute heart,
Tell me why You poured the light of novelty.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ The river Jamuna is closely associated with the story of Krsna in his early life as Vraja Gopal. On the stormy night of Krsna's birth, the Jamuna is said to have parted and made way for Krsna's father, Vasudeva, carrying Krsna to safety. Moreover, Krsna and his childhood friends used to play on the banks of the Jamuna.
