Ná d́ákite ele ná baliyá gele
E kii liilá tava priyatama
Kichui jáni ná kichui bujhi ná
Kena ele gele ghare mama

Lokmukhe shuni liilá bhálabáso
Liilár nát́ake káṋdo ár háso
Ámáre káṋdáye káṋdo ki háso
Mánite[nb 2] cái he nirmama

Bujhite pári ná kii káj liiláy
Kakhano káṋdáy kakhano hásáy
Ei jadi hay liilá abhinay
Tabe tumi dúre dúratama

না ডাকিতে এলে না বলিয়া গেলে
এ কী লীলা তব প্রিয়তম
কিছুই জানি না কিছুই বুঝি না
কেন এলে গেলে ঘরে মম

লোকমুখে শুনি লীলা ভালবাস
লীলার নাটকে কাঁদ আর হাস
আমারে কাঁদায়ে কাঁদ কি হাস
মানিতে চাই হে নির্মম

বুঝিতে পারি না কী কাজ লীলায়
কখনো কাঁদায় কখনো হাসায়
এই যদি হয় লীলা-অভিনয়
তবে তুমি দূরে দূরতম

Unbidden You arrived, and You left without intimation,
What is this, Your liila, oh my Dearest?
Not a thing I know, not a thing I comprehend:
Why to my house You came, and then went off.

From other people I hear You are fond of liila;
Upon liila's theatrics, You cry and You laugh.
By making me weep, do You cry or do You laugh–
I would pay heed, hey Unsympathetic One.

I cannot understand, in liila what's my task;
At times it makes cry, at times it makes laugh.
If this be just a liila, dramatic performance,
Then You are far away, oh the Most Remote One.

  2. ^ In the Sargam this word is given as Mánite (to heed, honor, respect). In the Second Bengali Edition,[2] it reads Jánite (to know). In context, both words are possible. Hence, it seems likely that there was no compelling reason for the change.
