Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Prabhu tumi elei jakhan
Kena eta karle derii
Tomár ásá patha ceye
Kata jug je geche ámári

Bhálo jadi báste jáno
Liilákhelá karo kena
Paráń bhare cái tomáre
Jenei dite carańtarii

Tomár áshe dine ráte
Chinu ámi shravań pete
Áshá niráshár doláte
Duliye ele krpá kari

Lord, only now You came;
Why did You make so much delay?
Watching the path on which You arrive,
For me, many ages went by.

When You know how to love,
Why do You make a playful sport?
With all my heart I long for Thee,
To receive the ferry of Your feet.[nb 2]

In hope of You, day and night,
An ear to the ground was I.
To dangle hope and despair,
Swaying, You graciously came.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ In the Garuda Purana the Guru's feet (the Guru's guidance) are likened to a boat that ferries the deceased across the mythological Vaitarna River. On the journey, all sins are washed away. The notion of Guru's feet as a boat is carańtarii (চরণতরী).
