রাতের বেলায় সবাই ঘুমায়
শিউলি কেন জাগে

আর ফুলেরা দিনে জাগে
রাত্রিরে ঘুমায়
দিনের বেলায় সুবাস ঢালে
মধুতে গান গায়
তাদের সাথে মোর পরিচয়
আলোর অনুরাগে

ঘুমায় ময়না কুকুরছানা
ঘুমায় যে মউমাছি
শিউলি তরু হেসে বলে
আমি জেগে আছি
বলো না মা শিউলি জাগে
কাহার অনুরাগে

মাতা
শোণ রে খোকন শিউলি জাগে
রাতের অন্ধকারে
দিনের আলোয় লজ্জা পেয়ে
মাটিতে যায় পড়ে
রাতের শেষে শিউলি ঝরে
হলে পরেই ভোর
সেই সময়ে সোণার খোকন
ঘুমটি যাবে তোর

Infant
At nighttime everybody slumbers;
Why do the shiuli[nb 2] stay awake?
Please explain, oh mother mine–
Please tell me ere I sleep.

Other flowers are awake by day;
They slumber in the night.
During the day, fragrance they emanate;
Sweetly they sing.
Their acquaintance I make
Through our mutual love of light.

Asleep are the puppies and the parakeets;
Asleep are the honeybees.
The shiuli shrub smiles and says:
"I am awake."
Mother, please reply, shiuli stay awake
Out of love for whom?

Mother
Darling child, here's why shiuli stay awake
In the dark of night.
By daylight they feel shy;
To the ground they fall.
At end of night, shiuli drop
Shortly after dawn.
At that time, my golden child,
The sleep that's yours will leave.
