The Supreme Direction (Caram Nirdesh) of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti sets out the essence of Ananda Marga and what it means to be an Ananda Margii. As such, it is published on a cover page of every book whose author is given as Shrii Shrii Anandamurti.[1]

Most Recent Translation

In December of 2005, some workers and margiis (including Acarya Abhidevananda), concerned about various inaccuracies and implications in the official English wording of the Supreme Direction, sat together for a few days to churn out a more accurate translation. Their main concern was that the official English wording does not correctly reflect the content and intent of the original Bengali.

Supreme Direction (from 2005 onwards)

One who performs sadhana twice a day regularly, the thought of Parama Purusa will certainly arise in the mind at the time of death and liberation is surely attained. Thus every Ananda Margii must do sadhana twice a day. This is the direction of Parama Purusa. Without Yama-Niyama, sadhana is impossible. Hence it is also the direction of Parama Purusa to follow Yama-Niyama. Disregard this direction and one may have to suffer the torments of animal life for millions and millions of years. So that no one will undergo such suffering, so that everyone might come to eternal peace under the loving shelter of Parama Purusa, it is the binding duty of every Ananda Margii to endeavor to bring all to the Ananda Marga path of welfare. Giving guidance to others about the way of righteousness is an inseparable part of sadhana.

History

The Supreme Direction of Anandamurti was first published in 1967 (although it might have been dictated in 1966). The first English translation was done by Acarya Vijayananda Avadhuta. That first English translation gave the title of these primary instructions as "Supreme Command". The translation variably began with the words "He who" and later "The man who".

Supreme Command (from around 1967 to 1976)

The man who performs sadhana twice a day regularly – the thought of Parama Purusa will certainly arise in his mind at the time of death; his liberation is a sure guarantee. Therefore every Ananda Margii will have to perform sadhana twice a day invariably; verily is this the command of the Lord. Without Yama and Niyama, sadhana is an impossibility. Hence the Lord's command is also to follow Yama and Niyama. Disobedience to this command is nothing but to throw oneself into the tortures of animal life for crores of years. That no one should undergo torments such as this, that he might be enabled to enjoy the eternal blessedness under the loving shelter of the Lord, it is the bounden duty of every Ananda Margii to endeavor to bring all to the path of bliss. Verily is this a part and parcel of sadhana to lead others along the path of righteousness.

In the mid-1970s, the female disciples of Ananda Marga in Australia and New Zealand approached Abhidevananda with an objection to the unjust male-slant of that wording. (In the original Bengali, no such slant exists, and that type of grammatical or linguistic bias is contrary to Ananda Marga ideology.[2]) Abhidevananda could only agree with their point of view, and so he brought this matter to the attention of the Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha Central Office, at that time operating out of Kathmandu (Nepal) due to the fact that Anandamurti was still imprisoned on false charges and the organization had been banned in India. In Nepal, Abhidevananda sat with Avadhutika Ananda Mitra Acarya, and together they hammered out a translation of the Supreme Direction that overcame the male bias. However, it should be noted that elimination of the male bias was their only objective. For that revised translation, they did not go back to the original Bengali text.

Supreme Command (from 1976 to the present)

Those who perform sadhana twice a day regularly – the thought of Parama Purusa will certainly arise in their mind at the time of death; their liberation is a sure guarantee. Therefore every Ananda Margii will have to perform sadhana twice a day invariably; verily is this the command of the Lord. Without Yama and Niyama, sadhana is an impossibility; hence the Lord's command is also to follow Yama and Niyama. Disobedience to this command is nothing but to throw oneself into the tortures of animal life for crores of years. That no one should undergo torments such as these, that everyone might be enabled to enjoy the eternal blessedness under the loving shelter of the Lord, it is the bounden duty of every Ananda Margii to endeavor to bring all to the path of bliss. Verily is this a part and parcel of sadhana to lead others along the path of righteousness.

After several years of non-action by the Central Office in respect to this matter, Abhidevananda instructed that the revised translation be published in the newsletter for Australasia (Suva Sector, then known as Sydney Sector). Anandamurti, still in prison, read that revised translation and approved it. His comment was that the earlier translation was in more Biblical English, whereas the revised translation was in more modern English.

Since that time, there has been no further, officially approved English retranslation of the Caram Nirdesh. However, unofficially, the need for this is great; and therefore it has been done.

Supreme Direction

One who performs sadhana twice a day regularly
the thought of Parama Purusa at the time of death
will certainly arise in the mind
and s/he will surely get liberation

Thus by every Ananda Margii
sadhana must be done twice a day
this is the direction of Parama Purusa

Without Yama-Niyama
sadhana is impossible
therefore following Yama-Niyama
is also the direction of Parama Purusa

Disregarding this direction signifies
millions and millions of years
suffering the torments of animalistic life

So that to anyone
such suffering
will not happen
so that everyone
comes under the loving shelter of Parama Purusa
and obtains eternal peace
for that reason every person
to the Ananda Marga path of welfare
try to bring

Of each Ananda Margii
it is a mandatory duty

To others the righteous path
instruction giving
is a part of sadhana
