Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Svarńa pradiip jvele ámi
Basechilum se sandhyáy
Puśpaháre vediir pare
Sájáte sádh chilo tomáy

Sandhyátárá balle ámáy
Obháve páoyá náhi jáy
Pradiip málá vedii báhire
Mane se máńik jhalakáy

Vrtháy ket́e gelo ráti
Nive gelo svarńa váti
Ráter sheśe shuktárá kay
Phire se[nb 2] geche alakáy
Trut́i chilo ántarikatáy

Kindling the golden lamp,
i was sitting that evening.
i had earnest will to decorate you
with the floral garland on the altar.
the evening star told me that
you were not attainable like that.
the lamp, garland, altar all are outside,
that gem shines in the mind.
the night passed off wastefully,
the golden lamp extinguished.
at the end of the night the venus star told
that he returned to the heavenly abode.
there was lack of heartiness.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ Although this word is omitted in the audio rendition and the Second Bengali edition, it appears consistently in the earlier Sargam. Clearly the word is important and must be retained.
