The Ideal Householder is the 19th chapter of Ananda Marga Caryacarya Part 1 written by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti.[1]

Synopsis

In this chapter Shrii Shrii Anandamurti told, an ideal householder should try to provide food to maximum number of human beings and animals.[1]

Disadvantaged persons and guests

Shrii Shrii Anandamurti instructed not to remain indifferent to the service of disadvantaged persons and guests. He also advised not to consider their lineage, culture, or religious beliefs while serving them.[1]

Service to animals

According to Anandamurtiji, milk-giving animals such as cows, should be properly respected and be looked after like human mother. Even after an animal loses her ability to give milk, she should not be killed or harmed.[1]

Service to beggars

Anandamurtiji told, the best way to serve beggars is to feed them. If cooked food is not available at home, they may be give food ingredients such as cereals, pulses, or any vegetables. Anandamurtiji recommended to try to arrange for their medical treatment, clothing, or accommodation, because as long as the beggar problem persists and the state does not shoulder the responsibility of solving it, the householders will have to bear this responsibility.[1]

Anandamurtiji opined although begging should not be encouraged, but arrangements will have to be made so that those who are genuinely distressed do not die of starvation. He said not to give cash to a beggar, for this will encourage others to adopt the practice of begging.[1]

Sadavrata

Anandamurtiji defined Sadavrata as the type of public charity that every sádhaka should undertake as an individual or that sádhakas undertake as a family or as a community.[1]
