Had forgotten the way.
Had forgotten the way.

So many moonlit nights came and went;
So much moonlight came and went;
The seat of my heart remained empty.
The seat of heart remained empty.
Then there was sound of your footsteps,
Then there was sound of your footsteps;
And heart was filled with nectar.
Heart got filled with nectar.
That swan came again;
That swan came again;
He recognized the path and took it.
He recognized the path and took it.

Tumi jakhan esechile is the 903rd song of Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar's Prabhat Samgiita.[1][2] This song commemorates the first initiation imparted by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti. The initiation took place on the night of Shrávańii Púrnima (full-moon day of the month of Shrávań) in 1939. The person initiated was Kalicharan Bandyopadhyay, a widely feared bandit. After initiation, he became known as Kalikananda.

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Tumi jakhan esechile
Takhan púrńimá chilo
Lukocuri cáṋder sauṋge
Megher calchilo

Dúr ákásher niiháriká
Candanete chilo áṋká
Navágata ek baláká
Path bhulechilo

Kata jyotsná elo gelo
Hiyár ásan shúnya chilo
Tomár padadhvani halo
Hiyá sudháy bhare gelo
Sei baláká ábár elo
Path cine nilo

When you had come,
Then the moon was full.
Playing peekaboo with the moon
Was the motion of the clouds.

Nebulae of the distant sky
Were drawn in sandalpaste.
One newly arrived swan[nb 2]
Had forgotten the way.

So much moonlight came and went;
The seat of heart remained empty.
Then there was sound of your footsteps;
Heart got filled with nectar.
That swan came again;
He recognized the path and took it.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ According to the Samsad Bengali-English Dictionary, baláká is a female of "a kind of small goose capable of flying high". It could also mean "a flight of geese". However, the word has been loosely translated as "stork" or "swan". Perhaps of interest, the current logo of Biman Bangladesh Airlines is a stylized white baláká in flight within a red circle.
