Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Varaśá eseche bharasá eseche
Cátaker trśá mit́eche
Shuśka trńerá shyámala shobháy
Gálicár rúp dhareche

Jal paŕiteche jhamájham kare
Amarár sudhá jena jhare paŕe
Háráno mádhurii tarute phireche
Jiiverá nútan práń peyeche

(Áji) Calo chut́e cali lakśyer páne
Duranta gáne durdama práńe
Phire cáhibár ghume kát́ábár
(Áj) Sab avasar cale geche

Monsoon has come; faith has arrived...
The chatak's[nb 2] thirst has been satisfied.
The dried grass, in verdant beauty,
Has assumed the form of carpeting.

Making pitter-patter, rain's been falling down,
As if heaven's ambrosia drips to the ground.
In trees, the sweetness lost has been revived;
The animals have got new life.

Come now, let us race toward the target
With relentless song and dogged spirit.
Reminiscence and sleeping in...
Today, all scope for that has vanished.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ The chatak (or pied cuckoo) is a partially migratory bird, considered in India to be a harbinger of rain due to its typical arrival just before the monsoon season. Sometimes the Bengali word cátak (chatak) is wrongly defined as "swallow" or "skylark".
