The Three Prerequisites for Spiritual Knowledge is a discourse given by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti on 1978 October 24 in Patna, India. This discourse is the second chapter of Ananda Vacanamrtam Part 4.[1]

Synopsis

You know, our transactions are of two kinds. You give something, and at the same time you take something – this is called a commercial transaction. You give some dollars and receive some article in exchange. This transaction is mutual. This transaction is a business. When the transaction is unilateral, that is, when you are giving something and don’t get anything in return, it is called sevá. In English, sevá is unilateral or one-sided.

Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

Anandamurti starts the discourse by saying that only a small minority gets the scope to enjoy spiritual bliss and achieve spiritual knowledge. The minimal requirement for that is having a human body. Anandamurti then explains that there are three preconditions for such achievement: Pranipatena (surrender to the Supreme being), Pariprashnena (proper questioning), and Seva (selfless service). Anandamurti goes on explaining that one receives spiritual knowledge from the Supreme Entity in the form of the Guru. Such an asset cannot be bought with money. Devotees will have to please the Lord by their tireless efforts to serve His created beings.[1]
