O innocent, ka'nu (krs'n'a'),
Foolish Kanu, there must have been some sorcery;
under what influence of delusion,
Imprudently, to Mathura You went.
did you go to mathura?
At Gokul in Vrindavan, Your every
Playmate was thus left unchecked.

You left all your playmates
The milkmaids, they stopped churning curd;
at gokul and vrinda'vana.
They merely weep without an end,
As they don't want their butter
When the butter-thief has left.
Imprudently, to Mathura You went.
Kanu, You have gone away, deserting us;
Neglecting our condition.

The milkmaids do not churn curd anymore,
The Jamuna no longer flows upstream;
but continuously cry instead.
No one plays flute to that melody.
They say that since the stealer of butter went away
The cows at pasture, toward the heaven
they do not desire to prepare it anymore.
Their faces gaze, grass uneaten.

Imprudently, to Mathura You went.
Ka'nu went away ignoring us,
Kanu, to become a king, You departed,
and then forgot about us.
Neglecting our condition.
No upstream flow is to be found in the yamuna' river.
No one plays the flute to that sweet melody.

The cows in the shed face upwards
and throw grass from their mouth.

Ka'nu went away,
became king
and forgot us.

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Abodha kánu kon kuhake
Bhule giye mathurá geli
Gokul vrndávane jata
Khelár sáthii rekhe eli

Gopiirá ná manthe dadhi
Káṋde tárá niravadhi
Bale tárá cai ná nanii
Naniicor je cale geli
Bhule giye mathurá geli
Kánu geli moder pheli
Moder kathá bhule geli

Jamuná ná bay ujáne
Keu ná bájáy veńu se táne
Got́her dhenu úrdhva páne
Tákáy mukher trńa pheli
Bhule giye mathurá geli
Kánu geli rájá hali
Moder kathá bhule geli

Foolish Kanu,[nb 2] there must have been some sorcery;
Imprudently, to Mathura You went.
At Gokul in Vrindavan, Your every
Playmate was thus left unchecked.

The milkmaids, they stopped churning curd;
They merely weep without an end,
As they don't want their butter
When the butter-thief has left.
Imprudently, to Mathura You went.
Kanu, You have gone away, deserting us;
Neglecting our condition.

The Jamuna[nb 3] no longer flows upstream;
No one plays flute to that melody.
The cows at pasture, toward the heaven
Their faces gaze, grass uneaten.
Imprudently, to Mathura You went.
Kanu, to become a king, You departed,
Neglecting our condition.
