Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Álori deshete jegechi ámi go
Tamasári páre gán geye jái
Nikaśa kálo ghume járá áche shuye
Táderi lágiyá d́ák diye jái

Ot́ho go bhái ot́ho álor páne calo

Oh, I awoke in the land of light;
From the other side of darkness,[nb 2] I go on singing.
Those who lie in jet-black sleep–
For them, I issue a clarion call.

O brother, get up!
Move towards the light!
Fill the deep dark night with effulgence!

The distressed humanity awaits you with restless eyes.
To move forward is the natural characteristic of life.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ Another valid but more literal translation of Tamasári páre (তমসারই পারে) would be "On the bank of Tamasá". It was on the bank of the river Tamasá that Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana, composed his first shloka, poetic verse.
