And why do waterfalls pass over pebbles?
And why do waterfalls pass over pebbles?

The lotus flower, full of fragrance–
Full of fragrance, the lotus flower–
Why does it bloom in a dirty pool?
Why does it blossom in dirty water?
This joyous planet, full of living beings–
Abounding with life, this joyous planet–
Why does it fly in a lonesome orbit?
Why does it traverse a lonesome orbit?
Constellations, blazing starlights—
Constellations, blazing starlights—
Why are they viewed only on new moon nights?
Why do they shine only on new moon nights?

Why children, fresh as floral blooms,
Why children, fresh as floral blooms,

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Dayál prabhu balo go tomáy
Dayál náme kena d́áká hay
Phúle kena káṋt́á tháke go
Jharńá kena upalete bay

Kamal kumud gandhe bhará
Malin jale kena bá phot́e
Jiive bhará khushiir dhará
Vijan pathe kena bá chot́e
Tárár málá pradiip jválá
Amánisháy kena ceye ray

Phúler mata shishu kena
Ghana ghana keṋde tháke
Cáṋdera álo kena háse
Kálo megher pháṋke pháṋke
Mandamadhur gandhavaha
Attaháse shilá jhainjháy

Merciful Lord, about Yourself please tell...
Why are You addressed as "merciful"?
On flowers, why do thorns dwell;
And why do waterfalls pass over pebbles?

Full of fragrance, the lotus flower–
Why does it blossom in dirty water?
Abounding with life, this joyous planet–
Why does it traverse a lonesome orbit?
Constellations, blazing starlights—
Why do they shine only on new moon nights?

Why children, fresh as floral blooms,
Must cry so loud and long?

Why moonbeams peep
Like frightened (captive) sheep
Through slits in ominous clouds?

Why the peaceful sky with its gentle breeze
Can suddenly transform,
Spitting streams of hard and painful hail
With the raucous laughter of a storm?
