In the forest Alarka found himself helpless and in trouble. Suddenly his eyes fell upon the ring and the suggestion of her mother, Madalasa, came to his mind, which was conveyed to him by his father, Chitrasena. He immediately broke the ring and found two pieces of advice written in it—
# "Do not have any desire, but if that be not possible, then have the desire for mokśa [non-qualified liberation]."
# "Do not keep any type of company, but if that be not possible, keep good company, satsauṋga."

Alarka thought it was not possible for him to become desireless as he had committed many evils, but he could try to follow the second advice and decided to keep good company.
