 In January of 1981, Abhidevananda was initiated into ''Kapalika Sadhana'' by Sarkar himself. Immediately thereafter, Abhidevananda took the oath of [[Renunciate#Classification_of_Ananda_Marga_renunciates|avadhuta]], at which time Sarkar gave him the name that he has gone by ever since, ''Abhidevananda''.
