History

In 1939, Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar was still a youth (18 years old) and studying at the Vidyasagar College in Kolkata. From childhood, Sarkar was in the habit of taking a walk at night in some lonely place. On the night of Shrávańii Púrnima (full-moon day of the month of Shrávań), Sarkar was walking near the Kashi Mitra Ghat along the banks of the Bhagirathi River. That night he was accosted by a much-feared bandit, Kalicharan Bandyopadhyay. Sarkar quickly won Kalicharan over and transformed his life.[1]

After initiation, Kalicharan became known as Kalikananda. Little is known about him after that. It is understood that he renounced his former life and took to a life of devout spiritual practice.
