Plot
The story begins with a scene where Tarun Kumar, a young boy was sitting alone on a sandy sea-shore. He was not counting the waves of the sea, rather he was wondering if he could all the water of the sea in a single gulp, like Indian sage Agastya, so that he could easily take a glimpse of the vast mysteries under the sea. But was such a thing possible. he was wondering.[1]
The sun was slowly setting down and it was the dark fortnight of the waning moon. Tarun had heard, many children who go for a walk there after dark never return home again. Suddenly he saw, someone, "a jet black figure" was approaching towards him. "Who are you?", Tarun asked. "I'm the chief ghost", the figure replied. Tarun did not believe it and told that he was a medical student and was not scared seeing dead bodies or skeletons and he had no belief in ghosts either. He also asked if he could do anything for him.[1]
The ghost admired Tarun's strength of mind and told, "I will do what I came to do. Other children would have fainted by now, but you are still conversing with me. I cannot but admire such strength of mind. However, I won’t leave this place until I’ve frightened you."[1]
