Please explain, oh mother of mine– Please tell me ere I sleep. Other flowers are awake by day; They sleep in the night. During the day, they emanate fragrance; Sweetly they sing. I make their acquaintance Through our mutual love of light. Asleep are the puppies and the parakeets; Asleep are the honeybees. The shiuli shrub smiles and says: "I remain awake." Mother, can you tell, shiuli stay alert Out of love for whom? Mother Listen close, my darling child why shiuli loves the night. She feels so shy in the light of day and hides away her face. Shiuli's precious petals fall at the break of every dawn, when you, my sweetest little one, from deepest sleep awake.
