Renaissance Artists and Writers Association or RAWA is an international organization of artists and writers, founded by Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar in 1958. Sarkar founded this organization with the mission to utilize and promote art as a method of self-realization and as a service to humanity. The slogan of RAWA is "Art for Service and Blessedness".[1]
Foundation
Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar founded Renaissance Artists and Writers Association in 1958 in order to restore art to its true role as an instrument for social and spiritual awakening. He envisioned an artistic renaissance where artists and writers would unite and inspire society to move forward in a progressive direction.[1]
Objectives
RAWA has the following objectives—
- to promote the ideal of "service and blessedness;" (When ones motives of expression are directed towards the upliftment of society, there is, in return, a sense of fulfillment in that person that cannot be equaled by any level of meaningless creation. That sense of fulfillment is termed here as 'blessedness'. RAWA rejects the idea of “art for art's sake.”
- to improve the psycho-spiritual development of society through art and literature;
- to suggest solutions to the outstanding problems of human society through art and literature;
- to inculcate the ethical and spiritual values of life in the human society;
- to create a proper psychological environment for the establishment of universalism by staging a powerful crusade against all sectarianisms;
- to arrest the trend of excessive commercialization of modern art and literature, and to create a healthy trend of utilizing both art and literature for the growth and evolution of human civilization;
- to create a strong moral movement through art and literature against all sorts of immoral forces responsible for the degradation of modern society;
- to provide encouragement and opportunity to the new generation of writers and artists by creating a powerful literary movement based on the higher values of life;
- to attend to the various social, political, and economic handicaps confronting talented writers and artists;
- to inculcate a positive philosophy of life in the society, which is presently haunted by a negative and pessimistic outlook.
