O lord,
One dark night on my pathway,
who are you who came
Lamp in hand, Who are You that came?
with a lamp in hand
I know You not, but near You came;
to show me the path to travel on
Effusively, love You gave.
in this dark night?

I do not know nor recognise you,
In darkness, recognize the path I don't;
yet, you came near me
And none was with to call my own.
and loved me irresistibly.
So I went on, summoning allies unknown...
Till You poured in my ear the mantra to invoke.

In the dark, I could not recognise the path.
A penchant for movement, addicted to the road I've roamed;
No one was with me to call my own.
Nonstop I have raced about with no existential goal.

Then Yourself You appeared, and the light You showed;
I continued calling an unknown friend,
To journey on the righteous path, me You told.
when you poured into my ear
the proper name (mantra)
to address and call you.

I had been moving with previous momentum,
intoxicated with attachment to the path,
aimlessly rushing about without pause.
You came and showed to me the proper path,
and told to move on a straight path.

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

(Ámár) Calár pathe áṋdhára ráte
Pradiip háte tumi ke go ele
(Tomáy) Jáni ná cini ná káche ele
Paráń d́hele bhála básile

Andhakáre patha cini ná
Ápan balte sauṋge keu chila ná
Ajáná suhrdere d́eke gechi (ámi)
D́ákár mantra káńe dile d́hele (tumi)

Calechi calár jhoṋke metechi pather preme
Lakśyavihiinbháve chut́e gechi náhi theme
Nije ele álo dekhále (tumi)
Rju path dhare calite balile (more)

One dark night on my pathway,
Lamp in hand, Who are You that came?
I know You not, but near You came;
Effusively, love You gave.

In darkness, recognize the path I don't;
And none was with to call my own.
So I went on, summoning allies unknown...
Till You poured in my ear the mantra to invoke.

A penchant for movement, addicted to the road I've roamed;
Nonstop I have raced about with no existential goal.
Then Yourself You appeared, and the light You showed;
To journey on the righteous path, me You told.
