Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Tumi áṋdhár nisháy dhruvatárá
Dáo ná hate pathahárá
Ámi veńukár kánane disháhárá
Vanaharińiir áṋkhitárá

Vanamarmare trasta cakita
Sadáshauṋkita bhávanáy jaŕita
Tabu tumi more ceye maner mamatá diye
Dáo dekhiye calivár ishárá

Kasturiikurauṋga sama chut́i
Nijeri áṋdháre bhiita haye ut́hi
Dekhi ná álok-rekhá ut́heche phut́i
Maner gahane bháse shatadhárá

On the dark night You're my Star of North;
From path You don't let me get lost.
In bamboo grove I am nonplussed,
Oh the woodland doe's Cherished One.

Startled by a forest rustle, timorous,
Always afraid, engaged in thought,
Yet You, seeing me, giving heart's affection,
Watching the goings-on, You beckon.

Like the musk deer[nb 2] I rush about,
Fear of own darkness being roused.
I don't see a ray of light has awakened, stretching out;
On mind's depths it rises in a hundred fashions.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ In yogic scriptures and commentaries, there is an oft-told fable about a musk deer who searches the world over for the source of the intoxicating fragrance that is coming from the deer's own self. The moral of the story is that happiness is to be found within and not without.
