Balechilo ese gán shonábe se
Tári ásháy pal guńi
Din cale jáy rátri ghanáy
Shuni náko tár padadhvani

Shishu taru haye gelo mahiiruha
Patre puśpe elo samároha
Brthá sájiye rekhechilum geha
Káṋdi jena mańi hárá phańii

Áloke áṋdháre úha-avohete
Ájo tár náme ut́hi náce mete
Tár deoyá man táhári jiivan
Niye tári priiti-jál buni

বলেছিল এসে গান শোনাবে সে
তারই আশায় পল গুণি
দিন চলে যায় রাত্রি ঘনায়
শুনি নাকো তার পদধ্বনি

শিশু তরু হয়ে গেল মহীরুহ
পত্রে পুষ্পে এল সমারোহ
বৃথা সাজিয়ে রেখেছিলুম গেহ
কাঁদি যেন মণি হারা ফণী

আলোকে আঁধারে ঊহ-অবোহেতে
আজও তার নামে উঠি নাচে মেতে
তার দেওয়া মন তাহারই জীবন
নিয়ে তারই প্রীতি-জাল বুনি

He had told, coming He will sing a song;
In hope of Him alone I count the moments.
Day departs, close by the night draws;
I don't hear the sound of His footsteps.

A young sprout went and became a huge tree;
A crowd came through flowers and leaves.
In vain decorated I'd kept a dwelling;
I weep like a cobra absent gem.[nb 2]

In light and darkness, crest and trough,
At His name still I rise, in dance absorbed.
A mind given by Him and a life that's His only,
Taking them I weave just His love-mesh.

  2. ^ Indian mythology places a precious jewel, nagamani, in the cobra's hooded head. Symbolically, the jewel signifies divine light. In the tantric tradition, the cobra represents the kuńd́alinii (one's serpentine force or sleeping divinity), and the jewel represents the sahasrára cakra (one's topmost energy center and the seat of final self-realization, corresponding physically to the pineal gland). In a figurative sense, the cobra without its gem represents one who is inconsolably grief-stricken at losing her/his most beloved.
