O lord,
Having come near, why went You far away;
after having come close
From this cruelty I get such pain.
You went far away.
In front You stood, then hid behind a veil;
From this ruthlessness of yours,
Of empathy is there not a small trace?
I am much pained.

Having once stood in the front,
To the treetop You raised;
You hid yourself in the back.
Why did You take the ladder away?
Do not you have a little affection for me?
The fruit of heaven You delivered;
Why sent You it adrift upon the river?
You roused from sleep a springtime blossom;
With the summer why did You incinerate it?

Raising me to the top of the tree,
The camphor lamp You let go out;
why did you remove the ladder?
Black soot is what still sticks around.

From heart bereft You removed sweetness;
Handing over the nectar fruit with your hand,
As if dead, it is deserted.
why did you throw it into the river?
I beseech a speck of mercy; I simply endure

That in Your contemplation I may merge.
You bloom buds in spring
and then burn them to ashes
in the intense summer sun.

After lighting the camphor lamp,
You allow it to be extinguished,
leaving behind only black soot.

Removing the sweetness from my green heart,
You leave it stranded as if dead.

I seek only a little grace from you,
in order to survive
until,
in your ideation,
I merge.

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Káche ese dúre sare gele kena
E nit́huratáy vyathá je pái (ámi)
Sumukhe dáṋŕále lukole áŕále
Mamatár lesh kichu ki nái

Brkśashiirśe ut́háiyá dile
Sopán saráye nile kena
Amrter phal háte tule dile
Srotete bhásáye dile kena (tumi)
Madhumáse kali jágáiyá dile
Nidághe jváláye karile chái

Karpúrdiip niváiyá dile
Kájaler káli lege áche
Hrta hrdayer mádhurii sarále
Mrta sama se je paŕe áche
Krpákańá jáci shudhu beṋce áchi
Tava bháve jena mishiyá jái (ámi)

Having come near, why went You far away;
From this cruelty I get such pain.
In front You stood, then hid behind a veil;
Of empathy is there not a small trace?

To the treetop You raised;
Why did You take the ladder away?
The fruit of heaven You delivered;
Why sent You it adrift upon the river?
You roused from sleep a springtime blossom;
With the summer why did You incinerate it?

The camphor lamp You let go out;
Black soot is what still sticks around.
From heart bereft You removed sweetness;
As if dead, it is deserted.
I beseech a speck of mercy; I simply endure
That in Your contemplation I may merge.
