Once there lived a fairy tale king
In legend, there was a king;
who knew not how to smile.
Alas, he knew not how to laugh.
With his hands he would walk;
Puffed rice he ate with his feet.

He walked on his hands
In the cool sunshine at midnight,
ate puffed rice with his toes
He dined on pie off a row of backs.
and openly snacked
With strength of tongue he chewed sugarcane;
on delicious cakes
Its juice he sucked with his teeth.
with his back to the midnight sun.

He chewed cane with his tongue
In the middle of the tennis court,
sucked its juice with his teeth
He spread a net to catch fish.
and cast his net
Fearing ghosts in the afternoon,
in the tennis court
Underneath the river he hid.
to capture succulent fish.

In the light of midday
Soaring upward with his racing sailboat,
underwater He would hide
He fanned himself in the distant sky.
in fear of ghastly ghosts,
During work hours his eyes were closed;
and racing speed boats
Feigning sleep, he snored.
to distant skies He would fly
for a breath of pleasant air.

While others worked hard
he would close his eyes
and very contentedly snore.

Rupkathar ek raja chilo is the 432nd song of Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar's Prabhat Samgiita.[1][2]

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Rúpkathár ek rájá chilo
Háste se je jánto ná to
Hátete bhar diye jeto
Páye kare muŕi kheto

Májh ráteri miśt́i rode
Pit́h rekhe se pit́he kheto
Jibher jore ákh cibota
Dáṋte kare ras cúśita

T́enis khelár mát́her májhe
Jál phele se mách dharita
Bhardupure bhúter bhaye
Jaler niice lukiye jeto

Báic khelár naoko caŕe
Dúr ákáshe háoyá kheto
Kájer samay cokht́i buje
Mat́ká mere nák d́ákáto

In legend, there was a king;
Alas, he knew not how to laugh.
With his hands he would walk;
Puffed rice he ate with his feet.

In the cool sunshine at midnight,
He dined on pie off a row of backs.
With strength of tongue he chewed sugarcane;
Its juice he sucked with his teeth.

In the middle of the tennis court,
He spread a net to catch fish.
Fearing ghosts in the afternoon,
Underneath the river he hid.

Soaring upward with his racing sailboat,
He fanned himself in the distant sky.
During work hours his eyes were closed;
Feigning sleep, he snored.
