I was not prepared.  
Today, the night has mattered, that I got.
Although my house was ready,
At night was the promise of Your advent;
my mind was not.  
The auspicious date was set.  


I did not leave my bed nor opened the door,
Even though event be known, ready I was not;
the sound stopped.
Even if home was dressed up, the psyche was not.
It disappeared with the assurance of again coming back.
Risen from my bed, the door I opened not
Lest the sound did regress;
But having left hope of return, it went.

Ráta bákii chilo
Uśá takhano uṋki dey ni
Kár padadhvani elo

Duyáre shuńalum karághát
Bujhlum áj ese geche sei rát
Je ráte tomár chilo ásár kathá
Tithi báṋdhá chilo

Tithi jáná thákleo taerii chilum ná
Grhasáj thákleo mansáj chilo ná
Shajyá theke ut́he dvár khullum ná
Dhvani jena phire gelo
Ábár ásár áshá diye gelo

শিউলি তখনও ঝরে নি
রাত বাকী ছিল
ঊষা তখনও উঁকি দেয় নি
কার পদধ্বনি এল

দুয়ারে শুণলুম করাঘাত
বুঝলুম আজ এসে’ গেছে সেই রাত
যে রাতে তোমার ছিল আসার কথা
তিথি বাঁধা ছিল

তিথি জানা থাকলেও তৈরী ছিলুম না
গৃহসাজ থাকলেও মনসাজ ছিল না
শয্যা থেকে উঠে দ্বার খুললুম না
ধ্বনি যেন ফিরে’ গেল
আবার আসার আশা দিয়ে গেল
