When Buddha first sat in contemplation, his goal was not fixed. He had doubts and confusions in his mind. He was also uncertain of what actually he wanted. Later, when he sat in contemplation once again, he took a complete saḿkalpa. This time he fixed his goal and determined that he would not break  his contemplation until he attained spiritual realization, even if he dies. Then only, Buddha attained ''Nirvana''.
