Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Abodha kánu kon kuhake
Bhule giye mathurá geli
Gokul vrndávane jata
Khelár sáthii rekhe eli

Gopiirá ná manthe dadhi
Káṋde tárá niravadhi
Bale tárá cai ná nanii
Naniicor je cale geli
Bhule giye mathurá geli
Kánu geli moder pheli
Moder kathá bhule geli

Jamuná ná bay ujáne
Keu ná bájáy veńu se táne
Got́her dhenu úrdhva páne
Tákáy mukher trńa pheli
Bhule giye mathurá geli
Kánu geli rájá hali
Moder kathá bhule geli

Foolish Kanu,[nb 2] by some sorcery;
Forgetting us, to Mathura You went.
At Gokul in Vrindavan, Your every
Playmate was thus left unchecked.

The milkmaids, they stopped churning curd;
They merely weep without an end.
They say: "We don't want butter
Now the butter-thief, You left.
Forgetting us, to Mathura You went.
Kanu, You have gone away, deserting us;
You ignored our condition.

"The Jamuna[nb 3] no longer flows upstream;
No one plays flute to that melody.
The cows at pasture, toward the heaven
Their faces gaze, grass dismissed.
Forgetting us, to Mathura You went.
Kanu, to become a king, You departed;
You ignored our condition."

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ Kánu is a pet name of Krsna as a child. It means "beautiful" or "handsome".
  3. ^ Gokul, where Krsna grew up, is located alongside the Jamuna River. Here, the river is also symbolic of the mind.
