Kathá kai náko káro sane ámi
Gán gái ár sur tuli

Din áse jáy mádhurii chaŕáy
Ámár manete rauṋ rekhe jáy
Soná jhará rode priiti parishodhe
Shońái sońálii gánguli

Tomáder kathá bhálo kare jáni
Tomáder tare sońá jál buni
Se jáler sońá dekháno jáy ná
Manete phot́áno cáṋpá kali

আমি গুল্-বাগিচায় বুলবুলি
কথা কই নাকো কারও সনে আমি
গান গাই আর সুর তুলি

দিন আসে যায় মাধুরী ছড়ায়
আমার মনেতে রঙ রেখে’ যায়
সোণা-ঝরা রোদে প্রীতি-পরিশোধে
শোণাই সোণালী গানগুলি

তোমাদের কথা ভালো করে’ জানি
তোমাদের তরে সোণা জাল বুনি
সে জালের সোণা দেখানো যায় না
মনেতে ফোটানো চাঁপা কলি

In a rose garden, I am the bulbuli.
Talk I don't, but I am also with speech...
I croon, and I put forth melody.

Daytimes come and go, sweetness on strings of rhyme;
In my mind, they leave behind colored dyes.
As love's repayment, under the sun gold-dripping[nb 3]
Golden songs I sing.

I know your words, fashioned well;
For all of you I knit a golden mesh.
That netting's gold does not get seen...
A champak bud is made to bloom in psyche.

  2. ^ In every Bengali source, this is given as gulbágicáy. The audio recording has it as gulbágicár (possessive rather than locative case). Here the Bengali source is preferred.
  3. ^ The bulbul (or bulbuli) is one of the first birds to sing in the morning, often starting just before dawn and continuing for hours. It also likes to sing in the evening.
