the illusory bud
With magic wine, they get besotted.
is intoxicated with illusory wine.
In the magic desert's hot airstream,
Every grain of sand is flying.

In the hot blow of an illusory desert,
Enchanted by the magic, dawn's red color,
sand particles take off.
It gets lost in evening's complexion.
Those who come, they will depart,
Bodies daubed with magic's sweetness.
In the play of magic, minds expand,
While the Wizard gently laughs.

The enchanting illusion
Enchanted by the magic, musical airs,
of the morning sun's crimson colour
With seven-note scale, they get sung.
dissolves into the evening hue.
Of songs that are done, a trace remains,

By sweet magic, with pleasant reaction.
Those who come, return singing,
This magic is not false; its enduring feats,
engrossed in sweet delusion.
The Wizard, dancing with them, is He.

The controller of this illusory game
softly smiles,
as he intoxicates minds.

Enchanted by this illusion,
the musical octave begins to sing.
And even should its song end,
the lingering trace
of a sweet and illusive after effect,
absorbs all in love.

This ma'ya' (illusive divine play) is not false.
For, its controller remains ever dancing to its actions.

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Máyá málaiṋce máyár mukul
Máyá madiráy mátiyáche (tára)
Máyár marur tapta praváhe
Bálukańá saba uŕiteche

Aruńer rauṋ mohinii máyáy
Sandhyárágete háráiyá jáy
Járá áse tárá sabe cale jáy
Máyár mádhurii mákhiyá gáy
Máyár liiláy mana upaciyá
Máyádhiish mrdu hásiteche

Gán theme gele resh theke jáy
Bhálo lágár madhur máyáy
Máyá nay miche se je káje beṋce
Máyádhiish táte náciteche

In this magic[nb 2] garden, the buds of magic,
With magic wine, they get besotted.
In the magic desert's hot airstream,
Every grain of sand is flying.

Enchanted by the magic, dawn's red color,
It gets lost in evening's complexion.
Those who come, they will depart,
Bodies daubed with magic's sweetness.
In the play of magic, minds expand,
While the Wizard gently laughs.

Enchanted by the magic, musical airs,
With seven-note scale, they get sung.
Of songs that are done, a trace remains,
By sweet magic, with pleasant reaction.
This magic is not false; its enduring feats,
The Wizard, dancing with them, is He.

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ In this translation, Máyá, a passing play of relative truths, is loosely translated as "magic". Carrying on with that motif, God as the Lord (Controller) of Maya, Máyádhiish, is referred to as "the Wizard". And Máyá's cosmic game, Máyár liilá, is referred to as "the play of magic". While this translation is valid, the deeper significance of these concepts should not be lost.
