Tora bal go tora more bal is the 487th song of Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar's Prabhat Samgiita.[1]

Lyrics

Roman script[nb 1] Bengali script Translation

Torá bal go torá more bal

Jáŕete kena náhi phot́e kamal
Eta keṋde mari nit́hur baṋdhuyá
Gharke mor kena náhi áse bal

Dáruń garame kena joŕe náhi jal
Nece geye d́aki ásháy tákái tháki
(Kena) Baṋdhuyá dúr theke kare chal

Palásh gáchete kena náhi dhare phal
Jár lági janam jár lági karam
Se kena jharáy mor áṋkhijal

Please do tell, do tell me.

In winter, why does the lotus never blossom?
I weep so bitterly, oh my cruel Love;[nb 2]
Tell me why to my home she won't come.

In harshest summer, why is water not combined?
In song and dance I invite; eagerly, I look, I bide;
My Love, keeping afar, it only makes deceit,[nb 3] oh why?

Why does the palash tree not bear fruit?[nb 4]
He for Whom I take birth, He Whose work I do,
Why does He make my tears spew?

Notes

  1. ^ For details on the notation, see Roman Bengali transliteration.
  2. ^ In Prabhat Samgiita, bandhu (বন্ধু), baṋdhu (বঁধু), and baṋdhuyá (বঁধুয়া) are appellations often used by Sarkar to address Shiva. The meaning of these three terms is roughly the same. They are all suggestive of a long-time friend, but the latter two carry a greater sense of intimacy.
  3. ^ Perhaps this is a reference to the dry thunderstorms that sometimes occur under very arid conditions.
  4. ^ The palash tree and its flowers are deemed sacred to Shiva in some parts of India, especially in the South. Though the bark, seeds, gum, and flowers of the palash tree are valued highly, the fruit, if any, of the palash is rarely mentioned and largely ignored.
