Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (Ladies) or AMURTEL is an international volunteer organisation that works to help improve the quality of life for people experiencing chronic poverty or acute stress from environmental, financial, or political distress. Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar founded the organisation in 1975 with the aim to respond and work specifically to the problems faced by women and children in their struggle to meaningfully develop in all areas of India and abroad.[1][2][3] The works of AMURTEL are managed by the Avadhutikas of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha.[4]

History

Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (Ladies) or AMURTEL was founded in 1975 by Marga guru Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar as a sister organisation of Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team.[5]

Mission statement

According to the mission statement of AMURTEL, they work to—[1]

alleviate suffering and to provide immediate and long term relief to women and children in need, in a manner that will improve their overall quality of life. If women are given an opportunity for education, adequate health care, economic self- reliance, and involvement in their own progress, their all-round health and well-being will, in turn, be reflected in the improved welfare of their children and community.

Branches

AMURTEL has branches in the following countries—[6]

AMURTEL Haiti

In Haiti, AMURTEL is working for more than 20 years. They have partnered with local administration and people to provide a children’s home, schools, clinics, literacy programs, reforestation initiatives, micro credit finance, and women’s leadership programs. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, they opened a children's school at Anse a Pitre, a village close to the Dominican Republic border. They also run a children's home that has provided shelter to many children.[7]

Principles

AMURTEL works on the following principles—[1]

  1. Every human being has the right to the basic necessities of life: food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education.
  2. The resources of this earth should be utilized in a just and responsible manner to meet those needs.
  3. Every human being, regardless of race, creed, gender, color, or social status is a dignified member of the human family and should be treated with respect and compassion.
  4. It is only by showing respect for women and ensuring their integration and active participation in the development process that harmonious growth in the family, community, and society can be achieved.
  5. Whether responding to a disaster or developing long-term projects, our programs are community based and work to empower the people we work with.
