Anandamurti starts the discourse by saying that ''tiirtha'' means a place of pilgrimage and ''tiirasthaḿ'' means a water line, a point that touches both the shore and the sea. ''Tiirtha'' is that point in which if you go deeper within, a state of bliss will you attain, but if you go externally, cruder you will become. Anandamurti then says that Parvatii asked Lord Shiva which is the best place of pilgrimage? Shiva's answer was: "here is one place of pilgrimage, there is another place. People of static nature wander from the one place to the other place. But without finding the real place of pilgrimage within themselves, how can they attain salvation?." Anandamurti goes on saying that people of crude nature go running from one place to the other in their search for God, however as God lies within their own "I" feeling, they can never get salvation.<ref name="AV34"/>

The Best Tiirtha is a discourse given by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti on 1971 October 24 in Vishakhapatnam, India. This discourse is the fourteenth chapter of Ananda Vacanamrtam Part 34.[1]

Synopsis

"O lady, támasik people, those who are guided by static ideas, move hither and thither – ‘This is the tiirtha, this is the kuńd́a [sacred pond], one should have a dip in it… this is the idol, this is that, this is that’ – and doing this they are simply wasting their valuable time, energy and money. These external tiirthas are actually no tiirtha. The actual tiirtha lies within, not without."

Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

Anandamurti starts the discourse by saying that tiirtha means a place of pilgrimage and tiirasthaḿ means a water line, a point that touches both the shore and the sea. Tiirtha is that point which if you go deeper within, you will attain a state of bliss. But if you go externally, you will become cruder. Anandamurti then says that Parvatii asked Lord Shiva which is the best place of pilgrimage? Shiva's answer was: "Here is one place of pilgrimage, there is another place. People of static nature wander from the one place to the other place. But without finding the real place of pilgrimage within themselves, how can they attain salvation?." Anandamurti goes on saying that people of crude nature go running from one place to the other in their search for God; however, as God lies within their own "I" feeling, they can never get salvation.[1]
