Keep Company with the Virtuous is a discourse given by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti on 1978 September 27 in Patna, India. This discourse is the nineteenth chapter of Ananda Vacanamrtam Part 2.[1]

Synopsis

Bhaja sádhu samágamam. You should encourage the company of sádhus. Sádhu – the detailed meaning is, he who uplifts others in all the strata of life. That is, he who helps others in their physical, psychic and spiritual development is a sádhu. Whoever has got more points than you, more resultant points in favour of merit, is a sádhu for you. This is just like the explanation of durjana. Suppose the resultant merit in your favour is 45 points, and another man has a resultant merit of, say, 60 points. Having 60 points of merit, that man is a sádhu for you. It is a relative term. Utilize each and every moment of your life in enjoying the company of sádhus.

Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

Anandamurti starts the discourse by explaining the shloka: Tyája durjana saḿsargaḿ bhaja sádhu samágamaḿ, Kuru puńyaḿ ahorátram smara nityamanityatám. It means that one should avoid the company of sinners or those whom have acquired more demerits than oneself, and encourage the company of those who have acquired more points of merit than one's own. He then explains that a Sadhu is an inner quality in a person and a uniform is only an external show if the benevolent qualities are not existing. One has to be engaged in Punya work - working for the welfare of others day and night. Anandamurti goes on explaining the four types of literature in Sanskrit. He says that Vyasadeva wrote Puranas in order to educate the people to always be engaged in good work (punya karma).[1]
