The Best Mental Engagement is a discourse given by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti in Anandanagar, India on the morning of 1988 May 28. This discourse is the 22nd chapter of Ananda Vacanamrtam Part 34.[1]
Synopsis
I said just now, the mind cannot remain vacant. Whenever there is no important job to do, do not waste your time in idle thinking, because idle thinking means mental deterioration, mental degradation, psychic degeneration. So utilize each and every moment of your life in doing something good, in thinking something good. When you are not physically doing something good, then mentally do something good. And the best mental work, the best mental engagement, is kiirtaniiyah sadá harih – “Do the kiirtana of Parama Puruśa.”.
Anandamurti starts the discourse by inroducing a shloka (verse) given by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu: Trńádapi suniicena taroriva sahiśńuná; Amániinaḿ mánadena kiirtaniyah sadá Harih. A person has to become very humble and extremely tolerant and pay deference to those who are deprived and distressed. Anandamurti then explains that it would be best to engross the mind with psycho-spiritual or purely spiritual thoughts, as in singing kiirtan to the Lord. Anandamurti goes on explaining that Hari means the one who steals. Out of great love for His devotees, Parama Purusa stealthily removes their sins.[1]
