Tears of Supreme Happiness is a discourse given by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti on 1978 August 30 in Patna, India. This discourse is the twenty eighth chapter of Ananda Vacanamrtam Part 1.^[1]

Synopsis

When Rudra is on the right (dakśińa), we pray to Him, “O Shiva! Protect me as Dakśińeshvara.” Even if He is happy, He also makes one weep. Tears fall from the outer side of the eyes in happiness, and from the inner side of the eyes in unhappiness. Therefore He is known as “Paincha Vaktram”.

In this discourse, Anandamurti explains a shloka: Asato má sadgamaya tamaso má jyotirgamaya Mrtyormá amrtaḿ gamaya ávirávirmayaedhi. Nobody wants to feel pain, therefore people want lasting happiness, light and eternal life. Anandamurti then explains the role of the Supreme consciousness as Rudra - he who makes others shed tears. Tears could signify great sorrow or great pleasure, but either way, the role of Shiva known as "Painca Vaktram" is to promote welfare and Happiness of all.
