Anandamurti starts the discourse by explaining that Ka'ma is the longing for finite objects, whereas Bhakti means guiding the withdrawn tendencies of mind towards the Supreme source. Anandamurti then says that the simplest formula for guiding the mind to subtlety is “karma minus jiṋánam is equal to bhakti". According to this formula, if a person has merited 500 degrees of selfless service and that person is illiterate, he remains with 500 degrees of devotion. An intellectual with 400 degrees of intellectual knowledge and the same amount of service, will only remain with a hundred degrees of Bhakti. Anandamurti goes on explaining that He will not discourage jiṋánam, but rather encourage intellectuals to render a greater amount of service to society.<ref name="AV34"/>

I Will Not Discourage Jiṋánam is a discourse given by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti in Bangalore, India. This discourse is the sixth chapter of Ananda Vacanamrtam Part 34.[1]

Synopsis

And the idea functioning behind ásakti, that is, desire for something limited, something finite, is called káma. And when the mind is withdrawn from all those physical and intellectual objectivities and guided towards that supreme non-causal spiritual entity, then that flow, rather, that mental propulsion, is called bhakti, or devotion.

Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

Anandamurti starts the discourse by explaining that káma is the longing for finite objects, whereas bhakti means guiding the withdrawn tendencies of mind towards the supreme source. Anandamurti then says that the simplest formula for guiding the mind to subtlety is: "Karma minus jiṋánam is equal to bhakti." According to this formula, if a person has merited 500 degrees of selfless service and that person is illiterate, he remains with 500 degrees of devotion. An intellectual with 400 degrees of intellectual knowledge and the same amount of service will only remain with a hundred degrees of devotion. Anandamurti goes on explaining that he will not discourage jiṋánam, but rather he encourages intellectuals to render a greater amount of service to society.[1]
